An Update from Ryerson University

on

Interested in studying Communications or Image Arts combined with Business all in one undergraduate degree? Then, check out Ryerson University in downtown Toronto and its Creative Industries program in the Faculty of Communication and Design. Well-known for its research and creative practice, Ryerson offers an array of similar undergraduate programs that are innovative and connect to the community: Architectural Science, Environment and Urban Sustainability, Child and Youth Care, Health Services Management, Business Technology Management, Aerospace Engineering, Public Administration and Governance, and Sports Media, just to name a few. Recently, an admissions officer from Ryerson gave an information presentation at Options Solutions on some of these undergraduate programs, their admission requirements and application process. Here are some highlights:

  1. One of the more popular programs appears to be Creative Industries with competitive averages for admissions in the High 80s and even 90%. Here are some expected competitive averages for Fall 2015 for the more prominent programs:
    • Creative Industries: High 80s – 90s: 166 seats (They admitted an extra 30 students last year. This program may be a Grade Plus program with additional supplements for 2015-2016).
    • Business: Low 80s
    • Professional Communications: Low – Mid 80s
    • Engineering: 80s +
    • Architectural Science: 80s +
    • Sports Media: High 70s to Low 80s (including video and essays, accepting 60 students.
  2. Programs that offer Co-operative Education include Business, which is new this year, plus Architecture, Science and Engineering. The four-term co-op placements after Year 2 are normally paid, full-time work experience in discipline-related occupations and would extend the program to four to five years. All other non-co-op programs will include an internship built in.
  3. Ryerson emphasizes that they use the General Supplement to evaluate applicants for admissions, especially when the competition is close among applicants. Therefore, it is in students’ best interest to craft authentic short essays. Applicants are recommended to use the ‘uploading’ option to submit the General Supplement and the School Transcripts.
  4. Application deadlines: It is recommended that students apply by December or January for early conditional offers: Deadlines: Feb 1st – Grade Plus programs; Mar 1st – Non-Grade Plus programs.
