UBC Medicine (MD) is one of the most sought-after MD undergraduate programs in Canada, offering top-notch training in the career field founded on strong evidenced-based practice, analysis and reflection, and highly professional healthcare service. The MD undergrad program is completed in three to four years with additional three to four years towards a specialization.
Last year, UBC received 1,920 applicants to the program, of which 750 were shortlisted for an interview. The total number of seats available is 288, which are spread across its four medical program sites: 192 in Vancouver Fraser Medical Program (VFMP) at UBC Point Grey, 32 in Southern Medical Program (SMP) at UBC – Okanagan, 32 in Island Medical Program (IMP) at UVic, and 32 in Northern Medical Program (NMP) at UNBC. Applicants are asked to choose a site only after they have been interviewed.
To be eligible to apply, applicants should be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents (international applicants with PR status who are studying abroad must have their international transcripts evaluated by WES or ICES). A minimum 90 credits of university-transferable courses (with grades) completed by April 30th in the year of program entry is required. Applicants must have a minimum of 6 credits of prerequisite courses (or equivalents) in English, Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Biochemistry. Please note that IB credits can substitute for course credit for pre-requisites but do not count towards the Grade Point Average (GPA) for admissions.
In order to receive a full file review – a full academic evaluation and a non-academic evaluation – applicants must have a competitive Overall (or Adjusted) Academic Average of a minimum of 75% for BC applicants and a minimum of 80% for out-of-province applicants. Both components of the evaluation are given a 50-50 equal consideration and independent calculation. In the selection process, each application file is reviewed by two to three evaluators and then discussed. Preference is given to BC residents with only 10% (29 seats) of the annual medical school seats available for out-of-province applicants. For those who wish to upgrade their courses to improve their GPA, it is recommended that applicants upgrade higher level courses.
Applicants must sit the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and submit valid minimum scores of 7 and M for Writing. Applicants can rewrite the MCAT as many times as they wish. Applicants must make arrangements to submit their scores to the school.
There is no limit to how many times you can apply to UBC MD. Postgraduate applicants with Masters or PhD degrees will be looked at equally as undergrads (Bachelor). For mature applicants, credits from all years of education are valid for admission evaluation.
